Kansas City, MI is one of the great cities of the midwest. If you are lucky enough to be visiting Kansas City, you can spend days sampling the food, the music, the art scene, and the sites. Kansas City is a sophisticated modern city, hot in the summer, and cold in the winter, with numerous museums, art galleries, restaurants and music venues.

Kansas City, bounded by the Missouri River to the north, contains more than 240 neighborhoods, some with histories as independent cities or as the sites of major events. Some of the most notable neighborhoods include historic Westport, Ivanhoe, Hyde Park, Squire Park, the Crossroads Arts District, 18th and Vine Historic District,Pendleton Heights, Quality Hill, the West Bottoms and the River Market.

Want to grab a bit to eat while waiting for your glasses to be ready? You have so many choices, it could be impossible to decide. You can try BBQ, a specialty of Kansas City, at the ever-popular Q39 restaurant or Jack Stak Barbeque. Stroud’s Restaurant and Bar is known for its fried chicken. If you are looking for something lighter, try YJ’s Snackbar, or Ill Lazzarone for pizza, both favorites of home-grown singer and songwriter Julia Haile.

Kansas City is known for it’s music scene, as it was the birthplace of swing and bebop, and for city lovers, it is known as “The City of Fountains”. Music lovers are drawn to the jazz clubs and old haunts of famous musicians such as Charlie Parker and Count Basie. With more fountains than Rome, there is ample opportunity for scenic strolling from fountain to fountain. Stop along the way to discover fascinating neighborhoods and browse through bohemian shops. If you are travelling with children, Kansas City is famous for its child-friendly activities. Science City features hands-on exhibits including a mock television studio where kids can deliver a weather forecast, while the Zoo houses impressive African and Australian exhibits plus an IMAX Theater.

On the First Friday of every month, thousands of residents and visitors fill the sidewalks of the Crossroads neighborhood and the 18th & Vine Historic Jazz District in Kansas City, enjoying a fun and very popular event. Arts organizations, galleries, studios, and a wide variety of local businesses feature regional and national artists as well as live entertainment starting at 5 p.m. Kansas City also hosts numerous outdoor festivals in the summer, including the Rockfest Kansas City, the UNICO microbrew festival, The Kansas City Power & Light District Family Fun Days, and the America Hot Dog Festival, thrown in conjunction with the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, which celebrates America’s favorite ballpark staple, the hot dog.

And don’t forget that Kansas City is a sports town! The Kansas City Chiefs have a great football fan base in the Winter, and the Kansas City Royals have their loyal baseball fans in the summer. So make sure to see a game when you are in town.
